Step 1: Mark the cutout

The MaxxFan needs a 14 x 14 inch cutout, plus 1/8 inch clearance. Center it between roof ribs on a flat panel section — never span a rib. Measure from inside the van to the roof panel, then transfer to outside using a plumb line through a small pilot hole. Tape the outline in painter's tape.

Step 2: Cut carefully

Drill four 3/8 inch corner holes inside your cutout line. Insert the jigsaw and cut slowly — aluminum roofs cut fast but grab blades. Steel cuts slow. Have someone inside catching the piece so it doesn't crease your ceiling insulation on the way down. File the edges smooth and hit the raw metal with primer immediately — an unprotected cut edge on a steel Sprinter will rust within a month.

Step 3: Butyl and set

Run one continuous strip of butyl tape around the vent flange. No gaps at corners, no double-thickness overlaps. Set the vent onto the roof and press down evenly — you want the butyl to squish to about half its original thickness. Screw the vent down using the 14 provided self-tapping screws, working diagonally like torquing a wheel.

Step 4: Seal the perimeter

Run a fat bead of self-leveling Dicor 501LSW around the entire flange, covering every screw head. Self-leveling sealant flows into the joint and cures to a rubbery, UV-stable finish. Skip this step and you will have a leak by the following spring.

Step 5: Wire to 12V house battery

Two wires from the ceiling drop of the vent — red to positive, black to negative. Run through 14 AWG wire back to a 15A fuse on your DC distribution panel. Do not tap into the vehicle's factory 12V. Do not skip the fuse. The MaxxFan draws up to 6A at full speed, so 15A gives you healthy margin.
