Winter vanlife is a different sport. Summer vanlife rewards good ventilation and shade. Winter vanlife punishes any weak link in your build — a poorly insulated wall, an exposed water line, an undersized heater, or an SLA battery bank sitting at 20 F. The gap between comfortable and miserable can be one bad decision on your build sheet.
This guide covers the four pillars of a real winter setup: heat, insulation, water, and power. It draws from a full season across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and southern Yukon — nights routinely below 10 F, a handful below zero, and one memorable stretch at -22 F outside Whitehorse. Every product mentioned survived that trip.
If you are still building, you are in the right place. If you are trying to salvage an existing summer build for cold-season use, most of this is retrofittable in a weekend.
The 30-second answer
Install a proper diesel heater (Espar D2 or Webasto AT2000 if budget allows, Chinese clone if not). Insulate to at least R-7 in the walls and R-10 in the ceiling using Havelock wool or a wool/Thinsulate combo. Run heated pads on your fresh water tank or plan on draining. Switch to LiFePO4 batteries with a low-temp cutoff or a heated variant. Ventilate on purpose — condensation is your real enemy below freezing.

Heat: the diesel heater debate
Propane is fine for summer cooking. It is a terrible primary heat source for winter vanlife. Cold propane vaporizes poorly, refills are inconvenient in remote areas, and burning propane inside a sealed van produces about a pound of water per pound of fuel — condensation catastrophe. Diesel wins on efficiency, safety, availability, and the fact that most cargo vans already carry diesel.
Espar Airtronic D2 (premium)
The Espar D2 is the reference standard. It is quiet, sips fuel (about a quarter gallon per hour on high, a tenth on low), starts reliably at altitude and in cold, and has a well-documented parts and service network. If you plan to spend serious time above 8,000 feet or below 0 F, the altitude-compensating pump on the Espar earns its price.
The downsides: it costs around $1,300 for the unit alone, plus another $200-400 in mounting hardware, fuel-standpipe kit, controller, and ducting. Professional installs run $500-1,000 on top of that. Total: $2,000-2,700 installed.
Webasto Air Top 2000 STC (mid)
Roughly equivalent output, slightly noisier fuel pump. If you can source one at a discount from a marine or truck-parts store, it is a fine alternative. Same install complexity as the Espar.
Chinese clones — Vevor, Hcalory, Maxpeedingrods (budget)
The interesting story of the last few years. A 5kW Chinese diesel heater kit costs $150-250 shipped, includes mounting hardware, and installs in a long afternoon. Reddit and YouTube are full of vanlifers running these successfully for 2-3 winters. Real-world caveats: the pump is louder, altitude performance above 9,000 feet is inconsistent, controllers occasionally die, and the fuel-metering pumps sometimes need replacement after a year of heavy use. But you can buy five of them for one Espar. For most winter vanlifers this is the pragmatic answer.

Insulation: R-value is only half the story
Insulation debates online focus on R-value per inch. R-value matters, but three other factors matter as much: moisture handling, thermal bridging, and installation quality. A perfect R-13 install with vapor problems will underperform an R-7 install that breathes.
Havelock wool
Wool is the sleeper hit of van insulation. R-value around 3.7 per inch (so 2" = R-7.4), it is hygroscopic (absorbs and releases moisture without losing R-value), naturally fire-resistant, and is not itchy or dangerous to install. It is expensive at $3.50 per square foot but you install it once and forget it. In cold, damp vans it dramatically outperforms closed-cell foam because it prevents the condensation-behind-panels problem that rots metal.
3M Thinsulate SM600L
Similar R-value per inch to wool, thinner, easier for tight spaces like door cavities and ceiling ribs. About $5 per square foot. Combines well with wool — wool in the large cavities, Thinsulate in the awkward ones.
Reflectix
Reflectix alone is not insulation. Its R-value against an air gap is real (about R-1) but people install it against a metal wall where it does nothing. Use Reflectix for windows only, or as an interior radiant barrier behind wall panels with an intentional air gap.

Water: freeze prevention that actually works
Fresh water freezes at 32 F. Van interiors freeze anywhere the diesel heater does not reach — which is most of your plumbing if it runs under the floor or through the wall.
Option A: Interior tank, heated pad
Keep your fresh tank inside the heated envelope of the van. Add a thermostatic heat pad (40W, roughly $50) as a safety net for the times you leave the van cold. Insulate all plumbing runs. This is the setup most winter vanlifers converge on.
Option B: Drain-down protocol
Some builds use exterior tanks and manage freeze by draining every night below 25 F. This works but is a chore. Add air fittings so you can blow lines clear with a small compressor. Store 5 gallons of drinking water inside in a jerrycan for overnight use.
Grey water
Grey freezes too and is much harder to unclog than fresh. Many winter vans skip a grey tank entirely and catch it in a bucket that gets emptied daily. Ugly but reliable.
Monitor your systems with the Victron BMV-712 battery monitor which also reports voltage trends that hint at cold-related capacity loss.
Power: LiFePO4 vs SLA in the cold
LiFePO4 batteries do not tolerate charging below 32 F. Discharge is fine down to about -4 F but charge damages the cells fast. Three real options:
- Heated LiFePO4 — Battle Born, Renogy, and Epoch offer built-in heaters that draw a few watts to keep cells warm enough to charge. Best answer if budget allows.
- Unheated LiFePO4 in the heated cabin — put your battery bank inside the insulated envelope and let the diesel heater keep it warm. Works but the battery is dead if the heater fails overnight.
- SLA (AGM) fallback — accepts charge in cold, but loses 30-50% of capacity at 0 F. Heavy, dies faster. Only reasonable if budget is very tight.
For a hybrid setup, a portable power station like the Bluetti AC200P or Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus gives you a moveable, warmable backup that can live under the bed at night.
Ventilation and condensation
The counterintuitive rule: winter vanlife requires MORE ventilation than summer, not less. Every breath, every pot of pasta, every wet coat off your body puts water in the air. Below freezing, that water condenses on the coldest surface — usually the inside of your metal walls, behind your beautiful insulation. Mold and rust follow.
Run your MaxxAir Deluxe fan on the lowest setting continuously. Crack a window when cooking. Keep a small hygrometer visible — aim for 40-50% RH. A dehumidifier is overkill; ventilation is cheaper and quieter.
Sleep system
Do not skimp on your sleep. A cold sleep at 15 F will teach you more about vanlife than any YouTube video. R-value under you matters more than over you — the mattress is your primary insulation from the cold floor.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need diesel? Can I run a propane furnace? A properly vented propane furnace like a Propex HS2000 works fine — those are sealed-combustion units that exhaust outside. The problem is unvented catalytic heaters (Mr. Heater Buddy and similar) which dump water and CO into the cabin. Sealed diesel or sealed propane, either is fine. Unvented, never.
How much diesel does a heater use overnight? On low, around 0.05 gal/hr. Twelve hours overnight = 0.6 gallons. A typical 20-gallon van tank runs the heater for about a month straight before your van is undrivable, so refuel when you refuel your daily tank.
Will my house battery bank freeze and die? LiFePO4 loses about 5% capacity at 32 F and does not truly freeze, but charging below freezing damages cells. Heated batteries or heated storage are the two answers. SLA batteries lose 30-50% capacity at 0 F but survive the cold better.
How much insulation is enough? R-7 walls and R-10 ceiling get you to about -10 F comfortably with a 5kW heater running continuously. Below that, add another inch or plan on running heat harder.
Is a heated windshield cover worth it? A quality windshield cover (Weathertech, Skyhawk) cuts overnight heat loss noticeably — about 15-20% based on our monitoring. Yes, it is worth $80.
